Jean Vincent is a Hannibal treasure and champion of the arts. The retired Hannibal artist and founder of Scipio Creek Pottery has graciously donated the remaining inventory from her pottery studio to the Hannibal Arts Council, which will host a Studio Sale of the inventory March 2-16. Proceeds will be used to establish a dedicated fund to recognize, encourage, and support the important work of the greater Hannibal area’s art teachers.
A special preview event to purchase one-of-a-kind pottery pieces before the official opening day will be held from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 1. HAC members can attend for free and non-members can attend for $10 each/$15 per couple. Tickets will be sold at the door. Proceeds from the preview event will also be added to the dedicated fund. The sale will then be open during regular gallery hours through March 16.
Scipio Creek Pottery was a family-run pottery studio founded in 1974 at the Vincent family home at Port Scipio, on the Mississippi River north of Hannibal. Jean and Christine Vincent, mother and daughter artisans, produced salt-fired stoneware and sold it in their shop at 322 N. Main, in Hannibal’s downtown historic district. The pottery operated from 1974 until 1993, when the studio and kiln were destroyed in a historic flood of the Mississippi River.
When Vincent returned to Hannibal after various educational and career sojourns, she served as Board Member and President of the Hannibal Arts Council and was named HAC Volunteer of the Year in 1987, 1990 and 1994. In 1996, Governor Mel Carnahan presented her with the Missouri Arts Award for her lifelong dedication to the arts. Vincent continues to be a champion of the arts, a frequent audience member, program participant and eager supporter of the Hannibal Arts Council.
